Special German meal benefits local independent restaurant community
Goetta balls, pork schnitzel and Jägermeister-influenced apples. Wunderbar! It’s Das Meal II at Shelbyville’s Science Hill Inn on Thursday, Feb 23. The downtown restaurant will depart from its menu of fine Kentucky fare to present a culinary journey of traditional German favorites. The 5-course meal will benefit Louisville-based Apron, Inc.
“This is a cause that is near and dear to my heart,” says cancer survivor Ellen Gill McCarty, chef de cuisine at Science Hill Inn. Apron, Inc. assists independent restaurant owners’ families and loved ones dealing with the financial and physical stress and emotional battle of cancer or other ailments.
Das Meal II takes place from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the restaurant’s courtyard. It will be prepared by Chef Ellen and hosted by Michael Beckmann and Caroline Knop. Each of the five courses will be paired with a German beer. German wines and non-alcoholic beverages will also be available.
Das Meal II Menu:
Goetta balls (prepared from an old family recipe), Sauerkraut Balls, Chicken Cordon Bleu Balls
Homemade Pretzels and Pimento Cheese
Potato Soup with Gatton Farms Smoked Sausage and Bacon, Cheddar Cheese and Chives
Kentucky-Grown Pork Schnitzel with Spaetzle, Sweet and Sour Cabbage, Baby Carrots
Mini German Pancakes with Jägermeister-Influenced Apples topped with Vanilla Ice Cream and Caramel Sauce
“Our first Das Meal was a blast,” says Gill McCarty. “The schnitzel was such a hit everyone told us we had to do it again.”

“People get all dressed up for Das Meal,” says Gill McCarty. “It’s just fun.”
