If there is any time of year to go overboard a la Clark. W. Griswold, it’s Holiday Season: There simply can never be enough twinkling lights, candy, cookies, or photo ops with the Big Guy. A weekend in Shelby County is just enough time to get your Griswold on and enjoy the holly-jolly out of these Christmas traditions with your family.

-Set your vacation calendar to one of three different tree lighting celebrations:

- Find a theme for your Christmas tree at Wakefield-Scearce Galleries’ 7-10 Open Houses. More than 30 trees, trimmed to their very tips in merry motifs from Noah’s Ark and Ooo La La to Blue Willow Winter and Meet Me Under the Mistletoe, will be spread throughout the galleries. The Silver Vault will be transformed into the Santa Vault and an expanded gift shop will bring more choices than ever before for holiday shopping.

- Snap selfies and photos with Santa Claus at the tree lighting event at either The Outlet Shoppes of the Bluegrass or Light Up Simpsonville or following the Shelby County Christmas Parade, starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2.

- Think your kids are naughty? Book a theater weekend with the family and meet “the worst kids in the world” – the Herdmans – during the award-winning Shelby County Community Theatre’s production of “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” Nov. 29-Dec. 2 and Dec. 6-9.

- At Great American Cookies, bite into a snickerdoodle or sugar cookie for a taste that takes you right into the Christmas season. For decadent chocolate treats – squares, bars, bites, barks – head to Ghirardelli Chocolates, where you’ll also find a heavenly array of chocolate gift baskets. Both confectioners are located at The Outlet Shoppes of the Bluegrass.
