Summary: These rides are made for speed. You can chose 16 or 13 miles of absolutely the best road surfaces in Shelby County. Small to moderate hills. Single file the entire way is strongly recommended. Start and end at the Bluegrass Outlet Mall.
Why the Lemonade Loop
Before there was an Bluegrass Outlet Mall in the exact same place that there is now a McDonalds, there was a seedy BP (Gulf) Station which had a really big dirt parking lot. Rides in the Southwest corner of Shelby County always started at the BP. These two rides are the perfect distance for an after dinner ride, and in the summer it was common to meet at the BP at 7 or 7:30 for a quick loop.
The Hunter’s Pointe Subdivision is on Buck Creek Rd at the very end of this ride. Some astute kids picked up on our ride pattern and frequently had a Lemonade Stand setup around 8:30 on hot summer evenings, hence, The Lemonade Loop!
The Ride
As soon as you cross the railroad track, you are in the country. After you pass Majestic Oaks, you are on a long smooth downhill. At the T, you start an uphill and it is very important to stay to the right, as the cars coming the opposite direction come fast and in the middle of the road. Riding along you can build up a lot of speed, but glance to the right as you pass an Alpaca Farm. The hills on Fisherville/Finchville Rd are well graded and make for fun riding.
If you take the shortcut, you will be on a beautiful single lane fairly straight country road which flattens out after you cross the creek for some smooth sailing. You then pass some very pretty horse farms before reaching Buck Creek Rd. If you continue on 148 into Finchville, you can just hammer. You will be going so fast, you won’t even notice the countryside. The short ride thru Finchville takes you past Finchville Farm Country Hams which is a third generation business operated by the Robertson family. You can buy one at Paul’s Fruit market in Louisville.
If you like speed, you will love Buck Creek Road. It has some hills with great visibility that you can scream down. Just be careful after you take the right at the Taylorwood intersection. You may encounter more traffic. Keep your eyes open, you may even pass a lemonade stand.
